Lead Firefighter (Hazardous Material Technician) Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Click here for more information on SRC for Firefighters (Primary/Rigorous) Duties Serve as Lead Firefighter directing the work of one or more firefighting crews engaged in firefighting activities and hazardous material emergency responses. Assist in the cleanup and disposal of unburied, spilled or damaged hazardous materials and chemicals. Conducts training for shift in ladder deployment, hose handling, and vehicle operation and emergency service subjects using resource material from recognized sources of reference. Directs on-the-job training for subordinates in areas such as pre-fire planning, fire inspections, vehicle and equipment inspections and minor repair. Assumes immediate initial control of fire and emergency scenes until arrival of more senior fire officers. Assign work tasks involving structural and/or wildland firefighting, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials emergency responses and standbys for hazardous operations. Plans work schedules, for assigned crew, with sequence to operation to provide equitable work distribution amongst crews on duty. Sets immediate and short-term objectives and goals for the shift based on given priorities.
